Found on many Shinola watches, a chronograph adds a stopwatch function to a timepiece and is easily identified by the two pushers (buttons) on the side of the watch case.
While all Shinola chronographs can be used to measure seconds and minutes, some sport models also allow users to track tenths of a second and hours. Regardless of the model, operating any Shinola chronograph follows the same set of rules:
How to use your chronograph
- START: To start your chronograph, press the button labeled "Pusher A"
- STOP: Once the chronograph is running, pressing "Pusher A" a second time will stop it
- RESET: With the chronograph stopped, press "Pusher B" to reset
- NOTE: If you press "Pusher B" while the chronograph is running, the hands will stop but the chronograph will continue to track time. We call this feature "accumulated timing," which you can read about below.
Reading your chronograph
Different styles of Shinola chronographs display information slightly differently on their dials, based upon the movement ("Argonite-5021" or "Argonite-5050" for example). After testing your chronograph, if you are still unsure of what is being tracked and where on the dial, please refer to the example images below or click here for a downloadable copy of our watch manual online.

Advanced chronograph functions
Accumulated timing (Quartz Movements)
In addition to basic stopwatch functionality for quartz movements, your chronograph is also capable of "accumulated timing," or the ability to stop and or restart the hands on the chronograph while continuing to track time. You might use this feature to make note of laps while timing a mile, for example. Please see the instructions below for quartz watches:
Accumulated timing (Automatic Movements)
Automatic chronograph models such as the Canfield Speedway do not have accumulated timekeeping functionality like our quartz models. The automatic movement does not have the ability to pause by pressing pusher B when the chronograph function is running. Doing so can damage your movement!
To use accumulated timekeeping on your automatic watch, press pusher A to start and press again to stop the chronograph (e.g. chronograph reading 15 minutes and 5 seconds). Press pusher A once more to start timekeeping and again to stop (e.g. 5 minutes and 50 seconds). The accumulated time = 20 minutes and 55 seconds.
For additional advanced functionality including recalibration (resetting the starting position of hands on your chronograph), please refer to our watch manual - click here for a downloadable copy.
For Canfield Speedway models, the chronograph hands cannot be manually recalibrated and will need to be reset by our watch experts. Please click here to complete our repair form to send your watch in for service.
